Background

Established in 1981, Newark Arts was created to advance and expand the resources and offerings of arts and cultural organizations in the great city of Newark, New Jersey.

Newark Arts provides leadership, direction, and technical assistance through partnerships with Newark’s many artists, arts administrators, community organizations, community development corporations, planning groups, economic development agencies, and government agencies as well as the general public.

Newark Arts’ goal is to share resources, develop collaborations and cross-functional opportunities, promote advocacy efforts, assist in audience development and public awareness of arts and culture, and serve as a cultural resource to the community.

INTERNS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR THE DURATION OF THE PROGRAM.

Overview

The Curatorial Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the curatorial team of Newark Arts Festival. This internship provides a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about the arts to gain hands-on experience in curatorial practices, exhibition coordination, and event planning within a dynamic cultural setting. Each week of the internship, the intern will gain insight on museum and gallery curatorial practice; they will use these skills to curate their own digital exhibition project.​

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the curatorial team to conceptualize, plan, and organize art exhibitions for  the Newark Arts Festival; contribute to the selection process of artists and artworks that align with the festival's  mission and theme. 

  • Work closely with artists, galleries, and venues to coordinate logistics for the installation  and deinstallation of artworks; assist in the management of exhibition timelines and ensure deadlines are met. 

  • Support the documentation of artworks through photography, written descriptions, and  other necessary means; assist in the maintenance of a comprehensive archive of past and current exhibitions. 

  • Aid in the preparation and organization of gallery spaces, ensuring a visually appealing and  cohesive presentation of artworks; assist with the creation of exhibition signage and labels.

  • Maintain artist and artwork lists; communicate with artists to collect contracts and insurance documents. 

  • Assist in the development of exhibition-related written materials, such as artist statements and gallery guides.

  • Provide on-site support during Newark Arts events and info sessions, ensuring the smooth  execution of exhibitions and related activities; assist with event setup, guest coordination, and other event logistics. 

Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant field such as Art History, Museum  Studies, or Fine Arts. 

  • Strong interest in contemporary art and curatorial practices. 

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic knowledge of design software (e.g., Adobe  Creative Suite). 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

HOURS PER WEEK: 28 (Monday–Thursday); Onsite and Remote (1-Day)

Compensation

  • $22.50 per hour

INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

  • Internship Period: June 3 – August 12

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28 

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: 4 days per week (3 days onsite and 1 day remote)

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.

Internship Application Process

  1. If you have received a confirmation email from Arts Intern indicating that you have been pre-approved and are eligible for the program, you can apply for any Arts Intern position in your city.

  2. You may apply for as many positions as you like. You do not have to submit the eligibility application more than once.
