Studio Institute’s first year in Memphis, TN kicked off with Creative Start– Memphis, a visual arts pilot program for pre-K students and educators in 19 Shelby County Schools classrooms. Designed to align with the Tennessee Voluntary Pre-K initiative, our discovery-based learning approach enabled four-year-olds to make choices and gain skills through the exploration of materials and their own ideas.
During 2018-2019, Studio hired and trained six Memphis-based, professional artists to provide ongoing mentoring and professional development to pre-K educators. Training focused on implementing a curriculum that supports children’s language, motor, and emotional development. Through art lessons, children explored paint, collage, paper sculpture, and clay.
To continue fostering the development of Shelby County’s young learners, Studio will work with Memphis Delta Prep for a tailored K–2 residency in the 2019–2020 school year.
