Background

ART WORKS Projects (AWP) is a Chicago and The Hague based visual arts non-profit dedicated to advancing social justice and human rights through documentary film and photography.

Founded in 2006, AWP’s projects have been presented on five continents, in 35+ countries, with 225 partners, and in collaboration with more than 200 artists to produce visual advocacy tools which produce action on human rights crises at the grassroots, media, and policy levels.

Overview

We are seeking an intern to support ART WORKS Projects develop and facilitate arts education and community engagement programming for an exhibition titled “Borders Cruzadas: A Collaborative Exploration of Migration,” which will be on view from June 20 – August 8 at the Glass Curtain Gallery at Columbia College Chicago.

Borders Cruzadas is a documentary photography and research-based visual storytelling project featuring archival and commissioned work by international photographers Oscar B. Castillo and Wil Sands, that actively engages migrants in shaping narratives about their lives.

Responsibilities

  • Activate the exhibition experience through the development of arts education programming for young people participating in Chicago Park District summer arts camps

  • Work closely with AWP staff, Glass Curtain Gallery curators and Columbia College staff and faculty, along with the featured photographers to learn about the goals of the exhibition

  • Leverage past work developed through a photograph-based workshop series to develop a facilitation guide for youth

  • Assist with any Borders Cruzadas-related social media and outreach strategies

Requirements, Qualifications, and Skills

  • Ability to work with a range of audiences and stakeholders, with a primary interest in youth and engaging them in visual arts projects and storytelling; 

  • Some interest and familiarity with documentary photography and social issues, in particular the coverage of the migrant and refugee experience; 

  • Comfort with public speaking and ability to interact with visitors of all backgrounds; 

  • Some experience and an understanding how to engage audiences via social media to highlight opportunities to experience some aspects of the exhibition and to highlight visitor experience 

  • Intern must perform a minimum of three days a week onsite at the Glass Curtain Gallery along with at least one day at the Borders Cruzadas satellite exhibition venue Pueblo Unido Gallery for community engagement workshops and tours.  

  • Some working knowledge of Spanish would be ideal, but not necessary. 

Compensation

  • $20.00 per hour

INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

  • Internship Period: June 12 – August 14

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28 

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: 4 days per week onsite (Mondays –Thursdays): 3 days per week at the Glass Curtain Gallery and at least one day per week at the Borders Cruzadas satellite exhibition venue Pueblo Unido Gallery.

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.

  1. If you have received a confirmation email from Arts Intern indicating that you have been pre-approved and are eligible for the program, you can apply for any Arts Intern position in your city.

  2. You may apply for as many positions as you like. You do not have to submit the eligibility application more than once.
