Student Scholars Honored at Art History Research Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to the 2023 Art History Research Award winners from six New York City public schools! The eight high school students selected to receive this year’s awards, along with 32 other program participants, were recognized in a ceremony at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) on June 2 to celebrate their accomplishment.

After welcoming attendees, Lisa Mazzola, MoMA’s Director of Young Learners, turned over the program to Karen Rosner, Director of Visual Arts, NYC Public Schools, NYC Department of Education, and Tom Cahill, President of Studio Institute. Selected students provided brief presentations of their research, followed by the award presentations.

On hand to honor the student scholars were art educators Sanela Roksa from Brooklyn High School of the Arts; Joyce Riley, Andrew Stele, and Ana Codorean from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts; Sacha Twarog from Frank Sinatra School of the Arts; James Harrington from the High School of Art and Design; and Kelly Trpic-Rukavina from Scholars’ Academy.

The Art History Fellows Research project, developed by Ms. Rosner, engages students in inquiry-based research that grows out of their genuine curiosity about an artist, an artwork, an art movement, or a socio-political issue around art. Students are guided by their art teachers throughout the process, which includes research, writing, and documentation. The scholarship awards are intended to support students in their college pursuits.

The Art History Research Fellows project so generously funded by Studio Institute, encourages high school seniors to engage in inquiry-based research that is based on their own interests as artists and art history students. For most students, this is their first experience writing a research paper, which better prepares them for their studies in college. This year, the topics they selected to study are as unique as each one of these wonderful students!

Studio Institute’s Arts Intern program, now in its 25th year, is delighted to sponsor the Art History Research scholarship program offered by the New York City Department of Education, and support students interested in pursuing arts careers. Arts Intern provides college students with financial need with early-career opportunities in the arts through paid summer internships in arts and cultural institutions in New York and eight other cities.
