Evergreen Museum and Library: Collections Management Intern (Baltimore)

OVERVIEW

The Collections Management Intern will serve as a team member of the Office of Cultural Properties. Over the course of the nine-week internship, the collections management intern will work on an ongoing project that focuses on key aspects of collections care: cataloguing and housing.

The intern will work directly with the Registrar & Collections Manager, assisting in the management of a historic photograph collection located at Evergreen Museum & Library. The intern will spearhead the physical and intellectual control of a portion of the collection through the documentation, organization, and stabilization of up to 1500 photographs. Additionally, the intern will participate in the daily projects and activities of the Registrar & Collections Manager and Collections Technician and understand the breadth of the responsibilities of these two positions at JHU.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Handle historic photographs in accordance with museum standards.

  • Conduct basis research on photographers and studios.

  • Record accurate, complete, and consistent data for each photograph, updating
    information to meet the metadata standards as set by the Office of Cultural Properties.

  • Create and edit high-resolution digital master files (TIFF) and upload to object records with missing images.

  • Partner with Registrar & Collections Manager to conduct collection inventory within textile storage.

  • Assist Collections Technician with minor conservation treatment of silver objects.

  • Attend staff meetings as directed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:


• An interest in archival and/or visual resource collections, information management and structured data, and/or museum registration.
• The ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining a standard of accuracy and efficiency the project requires.
• Basic research skills.
• Basis understanding of the principles of quality descriptive metadata.
• A close attention to detail.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Experience handling historic objects a plus.
• Experience with collection management software a plus.
• Familiarity with the basics of using a flatbed scanner (e.g. Epson Perfection V550), editing using native software, and uploading files to secondary software for data import.


Preference given to students with professional interest in a career in collections
management and/or registration.

COMPENSATION

  • $20 per hour

INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

  • Internship Period: June 16 – August 15

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: 4 days per week onsite (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays)

  • Work hours will be 8:30-4:30

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On Wednesdays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.
