New York Hall of Science: Explainer Program Intern (New York)

OVERVIEW
The Explainer Intern at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) will serve as an essential part of the museum’s Science Career Ladder (SCL) program, engaging visitors in hands-on STEM learning experiences. The intern will facilitate interactive exhibits, perform live science demonstrations, and contribute to the development of museum programming. As a frontline representative of NYSCI, the intern will enhance their communication, public speaking, and audience engagement skills while gaining valuable experience in STEM education, informal learning, and museum operations. Through professional development sessions, reflective practices, and participation in career-building activities, the intern will emerge with a strong foundation in science communication, teamwork, and community engagement. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Visitor Engagement & Facilitation – Actively engage museum visitors by leading interactive STEM exhibits, explaining scientific concepts, and fostering curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and math. 

  • Live Science Demonstrations – Learn and perform hands-on science demonstrations, making complex STEM topics accessible and exciting for diverse audiences. 

  • Program Development & Co-Creation – Collaborate with NYSCI educators to co-create and elevate youth voice in the design and iteration of exhibit content, educational activities, and interactive experiences that enhance museum programming. 

  • Professional & Career Development – Participate in training sessions, STEM Nights, workshops, field trips, and networking events, gaining insights into museum education and STEM-related careers. 

    REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong Communication & Public Speaking Skills – Ability to confidently engage, educate, and entertain museum visitors, fostering an inclusive and dynamic learning environment. 

  • Curiosity & Adaptability – A strong interest in STEM education, informal learning, and audience engagement, with a willingness to step outside one’s comfort zone. 

  • Collaboration & Teamwork – Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, interactive environment, supporting fellow Explainers and museum staff. 

By the end of the internship, the Explainer Intern will have developed critical science communication skills, audience engagement techniques, and hands-on experience in STEM education. This position provides a high-impact, real-world learning experience that prepares interns for careers in science education, museum programming, and public engagement in the STEM fields. 

COMPENSATION

  • $22.50 per hour

INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

  • Internship Period: June 2 – August 1

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: 4 days per week onsite (Mondays – Thursdays)  

  • Work hours will be 9:15 AM - 5:15 PM

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.
