Signature Theatre Company: Development Intern
OVERVIEW
The Development Intern at Signature Theatre will play a pivotal role in the organization’s fundraising efforts by conducting in-depth research, crafting compelling grant materials, and supporting donor cultivation strategies. This internship offers a structured, hands-on learning experience in institutional giving, providing exposure to the funding landscape of arts organizations while developing professional skills in grant writing, prospect research, database management, and donor relations.
Working closely with the Director of Institutional Giving, the intern will research and identify new foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities, compile detailed donor briefs, and assist in drafting grant proposals and letters of inquiry. The intern will also contribute to database administration, ensuring accurate donor records and tracking key metrics. The culmination of the internship will be a comprehensive research portfolio and grant materials package, which will serve both as a professional deliverable for Signature Theatre and a valuable portfolio piece for the intern’s career development.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct Institutional Fundraising Research – Identify and analyze new funding opportunities by researching potential donors, reviewing peer organizations’ funders, and compiling in-depth research briefs.
Develop and Draft Grant Materials – Assist in writing compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, reports, and acknowledgment letters, ensuring alignment with Signature Theatre’s funding priorities.
Manage Donor Database & Track Engagement – Support the upkeep of donor records in Signature Theatre’s CRM system, enter data, and assist with database cleanup to maintain accurate institutional funding records.
Present Findings & Contribute to Strategy – Compile research findings into a presentation for the Development Team and Executive Leadership, outlining engagement strategies and potential funding sources.
REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS
Strong Research & Analytical Skills – Ability to gather, synthesize, and present information from various sources to develop actionable insights into donor prospects and institutional giving trends.
Excellent Written & Verbal Communication – Strong writing skills with the ability to craft clear, compelling grant materials, donor communications, and research reports.
Organizational & Time Management Abilities – Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced professional environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Database Management – Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and willingness to learn donor management tools, particularly CRM platforms used for institutional fundraising.
COMPENSATION
$22.50 per hour
INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.
Internship Period: June 2 – August 4
Total Weeks: 9 weeks
Work Hours per Week: 28
Total Hours: 252
Workdays: 4 days per week onsite (Mondays – Thursdays)
Work hours will be 10 AM - 6 PM
PROGRAM DAY:
On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.
These hours are separate from the internship hours.
