INTERNS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR THE DURATION OF THE PROGRAM.

Overview

The Makerspace Education Intern at Brooklyn Children’s Museum will have a creative and organizational hand in the generation of a STEM project plan, as well as the execution, and facilitation of programming for family audiences at the Museum.

The area of focus within the education department will be the support of weekend programs in Nature’s Engineers, the Museum’s STEM makerspace inspired by the innovations and creations offered by animals, nature’s systems, forms, and patterns. Outside of Nature’s Engineers, this intern will have the opportunity to design, plan, and implement activities for festivals, community outreach initiatives, and museum-wide activities.

Makerspace Education Intern

Responsibilities

The Makerspace Education intern will:

  • Collaborate to establish detailed project plans for the workshops organized by Nature's Engineers

  • Help prepare and maintain workshop materials

  • Facilitate hands-on STEM activities for families

  • Engage with visitors, answer questions, and promote learning

  • Participate in festivals and community outreach initiatives, such as the Brooklyn Pride Festival, Juneteenth, and Celebrate the Caribbean

  • Play a key role in developing and coordinating engaging activities that enhance the museum experience.

Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications

The Makerspace Education Intern should:

  • Be able to work collaboratively and independently

  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal and time management skills

  • Be creative and problem-solving abilities

  • Be able to interact with the public and museum visitors

  • Bring a passion for education and learning

  • Have experience with Outlook, Google Drive, and/or Microsoft Office Suite

  • Familiarity with basic STEM concepts is a plus.

Compensation

  • $22.50 per hour

INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

  • Internship Period: June 2 – August 4

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28 

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: 4 days per week onsite; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 10AM – 6PM.

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.


Overview

The ColorLab Art Studio Internship at Brooklyn Children’s Museum will enable an intern to have a creative and organizational hand in the generation of hands-on activities for visitors, as well as the execution, and facilitation of programming for family audiences at the Museum. The area of focus within the education department will be the support of weekend programs in ColorLab, the Museum’s art-making space inspired by artists of African descent throughout history and the world.

This intern will also work with the public programming department and have the opportunity to design, plan, and implement activities for festivals, community outreach initiatives, and museum-wide activities.

ColorLab Art Studio Intern

Responsibilities

The ColorLab Studio Art Intern will:

  • Facilitate arts educational programs utilizing Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s collection and interactive exhibitions. Activities include facilitating public programs, art-making activities, and collaboratively workshopping curriculum and educational materials.

  • Participate in the Education Department as an active member to assess and plan for audience needs including program differentiation, evaluation, and post-program feedback.

  • Setting up and breaking down of programs; cleaning of the space as needed.

  • Maintain a strong commitment to holistic education, which involves welcoming, encouraging, and engaging with youth of all types to promote learning.

  • Assist with the design, planning, and implementation of activities for festivals, community outreach initiatives, and museum-wide activities. Planning for Cultural festivals may also include identifying performers, cultural partners, and vendors which may include initiating correspondence, making inquiries, and conducting research.

    The execution of cultural festivals at BCM may include supporting the creation of a run of the show, printing signage, supporting interpretation about the festival to be shared with visitors and in museum spaces, and helping to create and install immersive decorations.

The ColorLab Studio Art Intern should:

  • Be be able to work collaboratively and independently.

  • Have good communication, interpersonal, and time management skills

  • Be comfortable interfacing with the public and museum visitors.

  • Have a passion for education and learning.

  • Be creative and have problem-solving abilities.

  • Have experience with Outlook, Google Drive, and/or Microsoft Suite

  • Familiarity with basic arts and arts education concepts is a plus.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Arts Intern 2025, you must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree and:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time rising junior (a current sophomore)
    – or –

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time junior – or –

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time senior graduating by fall 2025.

You must either reside or attend college in New York City.

You must have a Student Aid Index up to $6,250.
