STEM Educator Intern

Overview

The STEM Educator Internship at Brooklyn Children’s Museum will enable an intern to have a creative and organizational hand in the generation of 3 to 5 STEM project plans, as well as the execution, and facilitation of programming for family audiences at the Museum.

The area of focus within the education department will be the support of weekend programs in Nature’s Engineers, the Museum’s new STEM makerspace inspired by the innovations and creations offered by animals, nature’s systems, forms, and patterns. Family audiences engage by asking questions, observing, creating, and testing to approach solving problems and innovating solutions.

Sessions in Nature’s Engineers are half-hour-long programs that take place on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Project themes rotate monthly and have included Nests (December) and Seed Dispersal (January).

Responsibilities

The STEM Education intern will:

  • Generate 3-5 public program project plans

  • Aid in the further development of Nature’s Engineers sensory bins

  • Assist with prepping supplies in advance of workshops

  • Support in-person workshops on either Saturday or Sunday, 10 AM–5PM.

  • In-person support will include maintaining and refreshing supplies, actively engaging with families testing their creations, co-facilitating with our STEM Educator cohort, and positively supporting visitors’ experiences at the Museum.

Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications

  • STEM Education interns should exhibit flexibility, effective communication skills, initiative, positivity, and creative problem-solving.

  • Background in working with early childhood-age and/or family audiences in informal education settings is preferred.

  • Familiarity with STEM is helpful but not essential.

  • The STEM Education intern should be comfortable working collaboratively and independently with support, as well as interfacing with the public and museum visitors.

  • The intern should be open to giving and receiving constructive guidance and feedback.

  • We welcome individuals who are confident with interdisciplinary exploration and who are passionate about progressive and responsive education philosophies and pedagogy.

Compensation

  • $22.50 per hour

INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

  • Internship Period: June 3 – August 5

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28 

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: 4 days per week onsite, Mondays–Thursdays. Position will also include supporting in-person workshops on either Saturday or Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM.

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.

Public Programs Intern

Overview

The Public Programs internship at Brooklyn Children’s Museum will enable an Arts Intern to have a creative and organizational hand in the planning and execution of public programs for family audiences at the Museum.

The two areas of focus within the programs department will be the support of weekend programs in ColorLab, the Museum’s family art studio based on highlighting the art and techniques of Black artists, and the planning of cultural festivals and programs on the 2024 calendar, execution of 2-3 festivals and weekday programs that fall within the internship period. BCM has a robust calendar of cultural festivals that celebrate the diversity of Brooklyn’s communities.

Responsibilities

Weekend programs are hands-on art-making programs that take place over the course of three pre-registered sessions. The work of a muse artist serves as inspiration for the project and rotates monthly.

The Programs intern will:

  • Assist with the prepping of supplies in advance of the workshop

  • Support the in-person workshops on either Saturday or Sunday, 10 AM–5 PM. In-person support will include:

    • Maintaining and refreshing supplies

    • Helping families to interpret the project prompt

    • Collaborating with Teaching Artists who are facilitating the program

    • Helping to more generally positively support visitors’ experiences at the Museum.

Planning for Cultural festivals includes :

  • Identifying performers, cultural partners, and vendors, which may involve initiating correspondence, making inquiries, and conducting research.

  • Supporting the creation of a run of show: printing signage, supporting interpretation about the festival to be shared with visitors and in museum spaces, and helping to create and install immersive decorations.

  2. You may apply for as many positions as you like. You do not have to submit the eligibility application more than once.
