Cleveland Play House (CPH), founded in 1915 and recipient of the 2015 Regional Theatre Tony Award, is America's first professional regional theatre. Throughout its rich history, CPH has remained dedicated to its mission to inspire, stimulate and entertain diverse audiences in Northeast Ohio by producing plays and theatre education programs of the highest professional standards.
CPH has produced more than 100 world and/or American premieres, and over its long history more than 12 million people have attended over 1,600 productions. Today, Cleveland Play House celebrates the beginning of its second century of service while performing in three state-of-the art venues at Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland.

We believe in the importance of theatre education to the well-being of young people and the community that is its mission to serve. Our educational programs create, strengthen and maintain the bridge between schools, community members, and Cleveland Play House.
The Summer Art Specialist Intern will focus on bringing the arts and related activities and professions to K-12 students who otherwise may not have access. The Summer Art Specialist Intern is responsible for teaching knowledge and skills in their field such as (but not limited to):
Art: Visual Artistry, Paint, Textiles, etc.
Theatre: Acting, Directing, etc.
Theatre Design: Costuming, Wig Construction, Sound, etc.
Writing: Playwriting, Creative Composition, etc.
Performance Studies: Everyday Life Performance/Expression, Performance Art, etc.
Music: Vocal/choral, Instrumental, Theory, etc.
Dance: Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Interpretive, Hip Hop, Ballroom, Tap, etc.
Each week of summer camp will focus on a specific theme, with the Summer Art Specialist Intern taking the lead in selecting the projects that align with the theme. CPH staff will provide ongoing feedback to support and guide the development of these projects.
The Summer Art Specialist Intern will primarily work in collaboration with the Director of Professional Learning and the Director of Education & Artistic Strategies at Cleveland Play House.
Responsibilities
The Summer Art Specialist will:
Promote and model CPH’s commitment to create a trauma-informed, anti-racist, safe, and positive approach to education that is culturally competent and creative.
Teach (direct instruction, curriculum planning, and implementation) in the preferred art form for students in K-5 grades, according to the schedule provided by the Director of Professional Learning.
Document and submit weekly attendance logs to Site Manager.
Create and maintain positive classroom culture in collaboration with other CPH other.
Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications
Strong oral and written communication, and strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to self-manage, solve problems, and make decisions.
Comfortable in both collaborative and independent working environments.
Strong commitment to working with young people, grades K–5.
Knowledgeable in design principles applied to selected art field.
Project and time management applied to educational practices.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and email communication.
Compensation
$20.00 per hour
INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.
Internship Period: June 16 – August 18
Total Weeks: 9 weeks
Work Hours per Week: 28
Total Hours: 252
Workdays: 4 days per week onsite; 9 AM–5 PM
PROGRAM DAY:
On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.
These hours are separate from the internship hours.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Arts Intern 2025, you must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree and:
Currently enrolled as a full-time rising junior (a current sophomore)
– or –Currently enrolled as a full-time junior – or –
Currently enrolled as a full-time senior graduating by fall 2025.
Reside or attend college/university within Cuyahoga County.
