Background
We harness the fire and danger of glassmaking to engage area youth. Our students develop patience, teamwork, creative problem-solving, plus the discipline and resilience they need to safely work with 2200 degree fire and molten glass. They gain hands-on experience in chemistry, physics, and math. They become young entrepreneurs as they develop and market their products. They join a vibrant community in which all learn from each other. Our young artists grow stronger each time they forge glass, and experience the power of their own creativity.
Since its founding in 2001, GlassRoots has engaged tens of thousands Greater Newark-area youth with its services, including its core Youth Entrepreneurship programs, student field trips and “art-for-art’s sake” classes for the public.

Teaching Artist Intern
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Teaching Artist Intern to join our team. This internship provides a unique opportunity to develop artistic, teaching, and nonprofit management skills while working primarily with youth audiences. The position involves assisting in art classes, supporting summer programs, and co-leading a high school internship program.
The Teaching Artist Intern in this position will:
Gain hands-on experience in glassmaking and art instruction.
Develop skills in program development and nonprofit management.
Build leadership capabilities through co-leading a high school internship program.
Responsibilities
Classroom Support:
Assist the lead teacher with executing art projects for youth and adult classes.
Prepare and organize the studio for classes and team-building events.
Help with preparation, cleaning, and maintaining class rosters and folders.
Summer Programs: Participate in Summer Camp activities and assist with daily operations.
Co-lead art programs for Newark Public Schools summer school.
Assist in syllabus development for the high school internship program.
Program Leadership:
Co-lead the summer high school internship program, including syllabus planning and managing evaluations through surveys and focus groups.
Write a final report summarizing the high school internship program’s outcomes.
Inventory Management:
Organize and maintain supply inventories for classes and events.

Oral communication skills to teach school-age programs.
Interest in arts education
A passion for arts and community
Willingness to both take and give direction with professionalism
Experience in art making and/or hands-on craft work would be ideal.
Compensation
$22.50 per hour
INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.
Internship Period: June 3 – August 5
Total Weeks: 9 weeks
Work Hours per Week: 28
Total Hours: 252
Workdays: 4 days per week onsite
PROGRAM DAY:
On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.
These hours are separate from the internship hours.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Arts Intern 2025, you must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree and:
Currently enrolled as a full-time rising junior (a current sophomore)
– or –Currently enrolled as a full-time junior – or –
Currently enrolled as a full-time senior graduating by fall 2025.
You must either reside or attend college in New Jersey.
