The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is one of the largest art museums in the American South and houses an outstanding collection of art dating from antiquity to the present.
Located at the heart of Memphis in historic Overton Park, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is a vibrant cultural complex that comprises 29 galleries, two art classrooms, a print study room, a research library, and a professional auditorium with state-of-the-art audio visual equipment. In addition, the facility includes a new café and both public and private meeting spaces. The Brooks provides visitors the opportunity to learn about the visual arts through diverse traveling exhibitions and thought-provoking in-house exhibitions.

The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, with the largest and only collection of world art in Tennessee and the Mid-South area, seeks a Museum Education Intern to assist in the planning and implementation of Super Saturday programming for the academic calendar of 2024-2025.
Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Education, the Museum Education Intern will research upcoming exhibitions and objects on view and create a schedule of themes and activities for the Fall and Spring Semester Super Saturdays. This is a family program that offers free artmaking opportunities for families inspired by the Brooks permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The intern will be able to use their creativity to generate ideas for art-making activities inspired by the Brooks collection. The intern will learn how to plan an art lesson inspired by art history, and how to create art-making activities for multiple ages.
Though the focus of the internship will be on education programs, the intern will work with staff in other departments (such as Marketing, Visitor Services, and Curatorial) to design, implement, and market this program. The Museum Education intern will also have the opportunity to assist in the planning and implementation of Homeschool Days, Summer Camp, and interactive experiences for upcoming exhibitions at the Brooks.
Responsibilities
The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art Education Intern will:
Plan weekly Super Saturday themes and activities from October 2025 to April 2026.
Study introductory programming materials and participate in a public education program.
Create a program planning guide with activities and objectives for each week’s program.
Research the Brook’s permanent collection and upcoming exhibitions.
Generate art lessons based on the Brook’s permanent collection and upcoming exhibitions.
Work with the Associate Direct of Education to refine ideas and schedule.
Work with the contracted Super Saturday teacher to refine artmaking activities.
Attend weekly meetings with the Education Department and the Associate Director of Education.
Assist the Associate Director of Education with tidying interactive spaces and executing Summer Camps.
Overview
Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications
An ideal candidate will demonstrate:
A strong interest in visual art, exceptional writing and researching skills, and strong critical thinking and communication skills.
The ability to work with a team and to complete tasks on a deadline.
The Education Intern will need to be creative in their ability to generate art lessons that utilize interesting mediums and take inspiration from the collection. In addition, flexibility will be needed as exhibition dates often change and unexpected obstacles arise. The ability to write in an accessible, didactic manner will be needed to excel.
The Education Intern will need to be familiar with:
Google Suite, including Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Drive.
A basic understanding of Canva is welcomed but not required.
Compensation
$20.00 per hour
INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK ONSITE AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

Total Hours: 252
Workdays: 4 days per week onsite, Monday–Thursday; 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
(7 hours per day with one hour for lunch).
NOTE: The Museum Education intern will be expected to participate in two Super Saturdays (July 6 and August 3) from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 pm.
PROGRAM DAY:
On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.
These hours are separate from the internship hours.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Arts Intern 2025, you must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree and:
Currently enrolled as a full-time rising junior (a current sophomore)
– or –Currently enrolled as a full-time junior – or –
Currently enrolled as a full-time senior graduating by fall 2025.
You must either reside or attend college in Memphis.
