nature center at shaker lakes

Design, Construction, and Installation Intern

Background | Details | Eligibility

Background

The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes (NCSL) was established in 1966 as part of a citizen-led effort to stop a proposed freeway that would cut through the 279-acre Shaker Parklands to connect downtown Cleveland to its eastern suburbs.

In addition to our visitor center for the larger Shaker Parklands, the Nature Center maintains an outdoor classroom that includes twenty acres of native habitat, two miles of trails, and other outdoor facilities that provide formal and informal learning opportunities for the Cleveland community.

NCSL conserves a natural area, connects people with nature and inspires environmental stewardship. It is our goal to make sure that we provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive outdoor space so that all people can connect with nature on their own terms.

Details

INTERNS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR THE DURATION OF THE PROGRAM.

The Arts Intern will design and implement a museum-quality educational exhibit space attached to NCSL's outdoor Jimmy's Treehouse. Sitting on stilts and built into the trees-with both a covered house and an open-air deck-NCSL's Jimmy's Treehouse is ADA-accessible and overlooks the scenic Stearns Woodland Trail, offering access to nature for people of all ages and abilities.

The project will enhance the educational purposes of our Treehouse and highlight its natural surroundings by displaying different animal nests in a constructed 25' high tower that can be viewed by the public. The project will emphasize the intersection of art and nature.

This internship offers a unique learning opportunity to blend art and nature, contributing to the enrichment of visitors' experiences at the Nature Center; collaborating with the Nature Center team to integrate artistic elements into educational programs and exhibits; and working closely with resident naturalists and educators to develop an artistic project that aligns with the NCSL's environmental education goals.

The intern will have the opportunity to learn and practice design, exhibit space design, carpentry and electrical skills; model making, volunteer group management, and exhibit curatorial skills.

The intern will be working under the direct supervision of the Facilities and Natural Resources management staff who will provide daily guidance and feedback, assistance with skill development, resources, and/or additional help in the form of personnel (if needed).

Responsibilities

Tasks will include: research of different nesting animals, design (including the nesting tower schematic), and the building of the exhibit; specifically, displays for nesting animals, lighting for displays for nesting animals and viewing ports.
