Overview

The Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center at the Newark Public Library is research-level collection of materials relating to New Jersey, Essex County, and Newark. The collection includes both historical and current information including books, documents, photographs, periodicals, ephemera, objects, and audio and visual materials. 

The NJ Room Archival intern will work closely with the Archivist on best archival practices. They will work on archival description and collection organization, and collection inventory. The intern will learn about condition and storage needs, proper enclosures and housing, arrangement, and will engage with item level basic processing of archival collections. 

Responsibilities

  • Understand and learn beginner concepts of archival description and collection organization, including condition and storage needs and arrangement.

  • Accept assignments and lesson plans on archival methods

  • Engage with introductory tasks including collection inventory and rehousing of collections

  • Assist in creating archival finding aids through written descriptions of materials

  • Present final presentation at the end of internship

Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Attention to detail and organization

  • Ability to engage in light physical work

  • Good verbal and written communication

  • Dependable and punctual

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Google Drive

  • Prior experience is preferred but not necessary

  • Engagement and interest toward history, archival, or museum materials a plus

Compensation

  • $22.50 per hour

INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

  • Internship Period: June 3 – August 5

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28 

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: onsite; 10AM–5PM, 4 days per week Monday

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.


 

Eligibility

To be eligible for Arts Intern 2025, you must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree and:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time rising junior (a current sophomore)
    – or –

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time junior – or –

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time senior graduating by fall 2025.

You must either reside or attend college in New Jersey. You must have a Student Aid Index up to $6,250.
