Curatorial Intern

Background | Details | Eligibility

Background

First established in 1974 with donations from over two dozen close friends and supporters of American artist Chaim Gross (1902-91), the Renee & Chaim Gross Foundation is located in the couple's historic Greenwich Village townhouse and the artist's studio space at 526 LaGuardia Place, and opened its doors to the public in 1994.

In 2009, the Foundation expanded its activities and opened to the public the building's third floor, comprised of the Gross's living and dining space. The Foundation stewards an extensive collection of over 12,000 objects that includes Gross's sculptures, drawings, and prints; a photographic archive; and Gross's large personal collection of African, Oceanic, Pre-Columbian, American, and European art that remains installed in the townhouse as Gross had it during his lifetime.

Since 2009 the Foundation has organized original exhibitions both onsite and at local and national venues on Chaim Gross and the history of American art. The Foundation also hosts public lectures and readings by major contemporary writers, poets and scholars. The Renee & Chaim Gross Foundation is a member of Historic Artists' Homes & Studios (HAHS), a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Overview

For our Summer Curatorial Internship, the Renee & Chaim Gross Foundation is seeking students with interests in art history, research, exhibitions, and public programming. We are a small nonprofit arts organization located in the historic home of and studio of sculptor Chaim Gross. Interns should have interest in the collection, which includes works of African, American, European, Pre-Columbian, Oceanic, and decorative arts.

Project and Responsibilities

The Renee & Chaim Gross Foundation sees this internship as a central part of the organization’s educational mission. In addition to crafting a strong focal research project for the duration of the internship, the Foundation stresses learning about the range of activities and roles within the organization and related institutions.

Although the intern will be under the supervision of the executive director, they are encouraged to speak with all staff members to learn more about their work. The internship work plan includes biweekly field trips to other arts nonprofits, conversations with professionals in the field, and ongoing discussion related to the role of artist-endowed foundations in the art world.

  • The Curatorial Intern will complete research utilizing collection objects and archival materials.

  • In collaboration with Foundation staff, intern will work on public programming, exhibition planning, or collections documentation that builds from their research on the collection.
