Studio museum in harlem

Curatorial Intern

Background | Details | Eligibility

Background

The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by Black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society.

The Studio Museum first opened its doors in 1968 in a rented second-floor loft at 2033 Fifth Avenue, just north of 125th Street. In 1979, the Museum secured the offer of a new home in the very heart of Harlem: the six-story Kenwood Building at 144 West 125th Street.

The Museum is currently constructing the first building in its history created expressly for the needs of the institution and its communities. Expressing the character of the community of the Studio Museum in Harlem, while advancing the institution’s global role, the architectural design for the institution’s new home takes its inspiration from the brownstones, churches, and bustling sidewalks of Harlem.

Details

INTERNS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR THE DURATION OF THE PROGRAM.

Overview

The Summer 2024 intern will work on projects to support the Studio Museum in Harlem’s curatorial department, primarily through tasks involving the Museum’s curatorial library and permanent collection.

Interns will meet weekly with their supervisors to discuss updates and questions as they arise. Interns are also invited to attend bi-monthly inter-department meetings with the Museum’s Collections and Exhibition Management, Communications, and Learning and Engagement teams.

Responsibilities

The Studio Museum of Harlem Curatorial Intern will:

  • Catalogue, organize, and shelve the department’s curatorial library, housed in a new permanent office space.

  • Contribute to the exhibition listing resource that will allow for deep engagement with and an understanding of mission-specific artists and exhibitions happening worldwide.

  • Write brief artist biographies that will be featured on the Museum’s website. By working closely with the Curatorial team in developing these texts for the Museum’s website, the intern will exercise thoughtful research and writing skills on artistic practice and become familiar with artists in the collection.

  • Have the opportunity to attend informal biweekly reading group sessions with both supervisors and an additional intern. These readings include texts that are relevant to the museum field and study of African diasporic art, providing interns with a space for critical reflection and dialogue among peers.
