Background

The Ukrainian National Museum, located in Chicago's historic Ukrainian Village, is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Ukrainian culture and heritage. Our extensive collections include artifacts, artwork, archives, musical instruments, and embroidered folk costumes, reflecting over 70 years of Ukrainian history in Chicago.

Collections Care Intern

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a degree program in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Humanities, or a related field.

  • Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy.

  • A good attitude and willingness to learn, communicate, and ask questions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a museum or archival setting.

  • Knowledge of preventive conservation practices.

  • Experience in emergency preparedness planning.

  • Familiarity with collections management software, preferably PastPerfect.

  • Knowledge of the Ukrainian language is not required but welcomed.

Compensation

  • $20.00 per hour

INTERNS WILL WORK ONSITE 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

  • Internship Period: June 4 – August 7

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28 

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: 4 days per week onsite, 9AM–5PM

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.

We are seeking a motivated intern to assist with cataloging our collections and developing supplemental materials our disaster preparedness protocols. This internship offers hands-on experience in collections management and preventive conservation within a museum setting. While knowledge of the Ukrainian language is not required, it is welcomed.

The Collections Care Intern will:

  •  Gain practical experience in collections and emergency preparedness.

  • Contribute to meaningful projects that enhance the museum's operations and visitor experience.

  • Provide the intern the opportunity to present their work in collections care to a museum audience if they so choose.

Responsibilities

Collections Cataloging:

  • Utilize PastPerfect software to document artifacts, including detailed descriptions, condition reports, and photographs.

  • Assist in inventory management, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records.

  • Assist in researching and labeling items in our collection.

Artifact Handling and Care:

  • Collaborate with the director and archivist to research and document best practices for artifact handling.

  • Participate in preventive conservation activities, such as environmental monitoring.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Research best practices in museum emergency preparedness.

  • Assist in developing a supplementary emergency response plan, including a proposed emergency response kit tailored to the museum's needs.

There will additionally be an opportunity to develop a research project at the museum, and interns are encouraged to deepen their knowledge of the museum’s collections.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Arts Intern 2025, you must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree and:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time rising junior (a current sophomore)
    – or –

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time junior – or –

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time senior graduating by fall 2025.

You must either reside or attend college in Chicago.

You must have a Student Aid Index up to $6,250.
